Police are using new technology to fight crime and keep the roads safer in Kirbyville. Patrol cars are now equipped with COPsync, a real-time information sharing software.

"This is cutting-edge technology that takes the burden off officers,"said Clopp Tuesday afternoon. "This going to make our officers safer and more efficient."

Five patrol cars are outfitted with a laptop, which gives officers access to a statewide database.

When an officer pulls over a driver, an officer can run a license plate or driver's license to find out if the person has any priors or outstanding warrants.

"This allows an officer to know what they're dealing with before making contact with the suspect," added Clopp. "if the person has a violent background, all officers are notified in the area."

Clopp says COPsync allows officers to print out citations on the spot, and allows officers to complete accident reports out in the field.

"Before officers had to go back to the office and spend three hours filling out a report," said Clopp. "Now it can be completed in less than 15 minutes."

Clopp says the software cost a little less than $10,000, which was paid by grants and donations.

The software has been in use since January and Clopp says it has already contributed to a handful of arrests.

"It is very beneficial," said Clopp. "Updates to the system are posted in a matter of seconds."
